Commenting on the vote by EU member states today against extending maternity pay to a minimum of 20 weeks at 100 per cent of earnings, Alistair Tebbit, IoD spokesman, said:
“We are pleased that the UK and other countries have blocked this terrible proposal. 20 weeks of maternity pay at 100 per cent of earnings is simply not affordable. Taxpayers would’ve been landed with a bill of at least £2.5bn a year. It would be wise for the Commission now to drop this proposal altogether.”
